Lyric Analysis: 'Freshmen' - Verve Pipe

"When I was young I knew everything
And she, a punk who rarely ever took advice"
When we were younger, most of us we were immature and unwilling to listen. We thought we know a lot.

"Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbin' with my head on the floor"
He's regretting.

"Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no"
Get an abortion to avoid marriage.

*pre-chorus
"I can't be held responsible

'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place"
He refuses to take responsibility for impregnating the girl. He blames her for seducing him.

*chorus
"For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise"
He wonders what he was thinking back then, making all these mistakes and not sacrificing a little for the right decisions.

*chorus
"For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen"
What's done is done. It's all in the past. We were all just young and naive.

"My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept"
His friend moved on quickly but the girl committed suicide.

"And now he's guilt stricken sobbin' with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says"
Years later, his friend thinks back about this incident and wonders why he did not feel sorry at all.

*pre-chorus
*chorus

"We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lack in relationships"
They tried to forget about the past and they do not admit that it is difficult to have another relationship since realising what they have done.

"And how we're guilt stricken sobbin' with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say"
They thought they were careful, but it happened anyway. All they can do now is to comfort themselves with excuses.

*pre-chorus
*chorus x 2
