Movie Review: True Grit (2010)

Rated: 18
Genre: Drama
Running Time: 1 Hour 50 Minutes
Director: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin
"An adaptation of the Charles Portis novel, 14-year-old girl Mattie Ross joins an ageing U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father's killer into hostile Indian territory. Sticking more closely to the source material than the 1969 feature adaptation starring Western icon John Wayne, the Coens' "True Grit" tells the story from the young girl's perspective, and re-teams the celebrated filmmaking duo with their "No Country for Old Men" screenwriting partner Scott Rudin. Josh Brolin co-stars." -Cinema Online

This film was actually released in December 2010 in the U.S and is nominated for ten categories of the upcoming Academy Awards.

Verdict: Although I have not read the novel that the film was based on nor have I seen the other adaptation, I strongly believe that this is a masterpiece rendition. Very well written script and captivating performance by Jeff Bridges and 14 year-old Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld. The pace of the movie is probably the only downside. Unlike other dramas, it doesn't slow down with long-winded conversations to get the viewers emotionally involved with the characters. I was considerably surprised that the running time is less than 2 hours.

Favourite scene: (SPOILER BEGINS HERE) The ending where nobody gets a corny glorified closure. Cogburn does not manage to kill all four of the villains by himself; LaBouef does not get to have a speech after saving Cogburn from Ned; and Mattie gets what she wants but falls into the cave and loses one hand to the poison of a snake. However, there is one thing I wasn't sure about. Why did Cogburn kill Little Blackie (Mattie's horse) for? (SPOILER ENDS HERE)

The slurring drunkard: Bridges did brilliantly to potray Cogburn but it was quite difficult for me to understand most of his lines. Apparently I wasn't the only one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFHwG8ikZAY. Hilarious.

"You're a man with true grit" basically means "you got balls."

Rating: 4 / 5

Her verdict: "Quite nice but the ending emooooo."
