Movie Review: Chronicle (2012)

Chronicle 2012 movie poster film review
Rated: PG-13
Genre: Science fiction, sci-fi action thriller
Running Time: 1 Hour 25 Minutes
Director: Josh Trank
Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael Kelly

Synopsis: "New technologies and social communities allow us to record, post and comment on every second of our lives, sharing our every emotion and opinion with the world, no matter how mundane. For three high school classmates who suddenly gain superpowers from a mysterious substance, the chronicle of their ordinary lives is about to take on extraordinary turn. Initially they use their powers to play innocent pranks on each other and people around them, but soon they gain confidence and learn to control their powers better to take on more difficult tasks. Their newfound sense of immortality and impunity will force them to evaluate their own morality to ultimately decide where to draw the line about how far they should go" (20th Century Fox).

Verdict: The trailer of the film gave away too much, leaving not much to compel the viewers with. It's quite pointless to have the movie in found footage/mockumentary style when every scene is nicely cut and arranged. But then again if it wasn't in found footage style, it would've been a total rip-off of The Source (a.k.a The Surge released in 2002) or X-Files' "Rush" episode due to the plots' similarities. Chronicle does, however, have its moments with impressive real-life Dragon Ball-like special effects and some casual teen humour.

In the movie... Andrew's (Dane DeHaan) a fuckin' camwhore, and the other people with cameras like to record even at very inappropriate and needless situations.

Biggest cliche: [SPOILER] The black guy (Steve) dies. [SPOILER ENDS]

The ending: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] Andrew goes all crazy using all of his supernatural powers (except thunder, for unknown reason) on everyone around his. In order to stop the massacre, his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) is forced to make the statue right behind him to fall on him. The spear of the statue thrusts through Andrew's body, killing him presumably (so much for their invulnerability). Matt flies to Tibet, where Andrew initially wanted to travel with him and Steve (Michael B. Jordan), and promises to find out what happened to them on the night (the incident that gave them the powers). [SPOILER ENDS HERE] And that's like saying that the writers and the director of the film couldn't think of any bullshit story just to explain how and why they got the powers. Or just too lazy to do so.

Analysis on the story: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] Super powers can do a lot, but it can't save Andrew's sick mother or change his father's irresponsible and abusive behaviour. Feeling that he has no place in this world, Andrew becomes delusional, and overly obsessed with his powers and himself. His anger and power grow so strong that they become a bomb which ultimately explodes thanks to his father. So ain't no troubled high school nerd with superhuman abilities is gonna turn out to be a superhero like Spider-Man. The lyrics of the song "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie, played during one of the scenes, indirectly relates to the story of the movie. [SPOILER ENDS HERE]

Rating: 2 / 5

Second opinion: "Enjoyed it, seeing them flying around made me happy" (Iris Loong).

  5. The father was stupidly abusively, shit excuse to blame him when he was in the hospital.

I laughed when the black guy died simply because. he died.... -_-

The spear part was so freaking predictable , when i saw them land around the statue i already knew the statue was the one.
