Movie review: THE HUNGER GAMES

Hunger Games 2012 film movie poster

Rated: PG-13
Genre: Action, drama, science fiction
Running Time: 2 Hours 23 Minutes
Director: Gary Ross
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

Synopsis: "Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love" (Nusantara Edaran Filem).

Verdict: Not to say that I didn't like The Hunger Games at all, but Battle Royale (2000) is just superior in many aspects. Due to the almost identical concept of these two titles, I just can't help but to compare their film adaptations. Hunger Games has great cinematography and a brilliant performance by lead actress Jennifer Lawrence. However, the movie is slightly predictable, untruthful and emotionally unengaging. The development of the characters are quite shallow as well. And also, Battle Royale addresses real world issues whereas Hunger Games does not seem to have any greater purpose other than just to entertain. If you've seen Battle Royale before this, I bet you'd feel the same way.

Second opinion: "Very entertaining" (Iris Loong; has yet to see Battle Royale).

Malaysian censorship: Nothing is cut at all, I believe.

Hollywood remake of Battle Royale? Absurd to still go on with it now.

Rating: 3 / 5

Similarities between Battle Royale & Hunger Games -
  1. Annually, a group of selected teenagers are forced to participate in the game where they must kill each other until only one survives at the end.
  2. The winners of the games are celebrated by the media.
  3. There's a high-tech control room to operate the games & to manipulate & track the participants.
  4. Participants cannot choose what weapon they want.
  5. There are highly skilled voluntary participants.
  6. Some participants group up to form an alliance.
  7. The protagonist rebels against the system.
  8. The location of the game is largely a jungle.
  9. Deaths are announced during the games.
  10. There are more than a survivor in the end.
  1. nothing is cut at all? that sounds unbelievable. i wish i've watched it last night!

  2. Second opinion: "Very entertaining" (Iris Loong; has yet to see Battle Royale).

    Trololololol :D

  3. i thought the concept was good, but not that engaging for the fight/combat movie.. didnt watch battle royale tho, will seek for it!: D

  4. I've never watch Battle Royale too but I don't really like the story. It makes me feel "like this also can?"

  5. I found out that the story in front was a bit boring, but when the survival thing started, all seems to become more interesting! Overall, the movie was pretty cool for me. =D

  6. hmmm...may be i should watch it but like you, battle royale had set a very high standard in this..i highly doubt this Hollywood adaptation could satisfy me..if u mentioned there are voluntary contestant, the it lacks the element that portrays Kiriyama's reason to take part..

  7. Like what iris says, I think it's very entertaining too. Hahaha!! XD

  8. this movie can't match Battle Royal's brutality at all... i would prefer if this show can cut out the emotional draggy part with that little girl Rue instead there's more attractive style of killing strategies among them... hate the annoying fashion of the modern people in the city. Why don't they just make them dress up like the people in Tron instead? Modern yet sophisticated

  9. they are more survivor at the end?? LOL

macam Gusti Battle Royale is it? lol *stonecold stunner*

  10. You guys should understand it's adapted from a book right? -____-

  11. Like Chee Ching say, adapted from the book. They follow closely to the book (something which I like) from the first part of the film because I only read until chapter 3 of the book. haha!

  12. itu Japanese punya, ini orang putih punya. LOL. japanese seem to be more brutal and violent. like ki siao violence. hahahah.

  13. I liked battle royale version. Might catch this just to compare :)

  14. Indeed a very predictable ending but was a good watch and a refreshing movie from the current ones.
