Movie Review: Marvel's The Avengers (2012 film)

Marvel's The Avengers 2012 film movie poster
Rated: PG-13
Genre: Superhero, action, adventure
Running Time: 2 Hours 23 Minutes
Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson

Synopsis: "Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in 'Iron Man', 'The Incredible Hulk', 'Iron Man 2', 'Thor' and 'Captain America: The First Avenger', 'Marvel's The Avengers' is the superhero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as SHIELD, finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. "Marvel's The Avengers" is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series 'The Avengers,' first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when 'Marvel's The Avengers' assemble in summer 2012" (Walt Disney Studios Pictures Malaysia).

Verdict: A purely authentic superhero film that will certainly entertain all long time Marvel fans and those who liked the preceding films. The Avengers lived up to its hype. Tightly plotted, smart humour, epic action, amazing visual effects, and acceptably cheesy. Mark Ruffulo surprisingly turned out to be a great fit to the cast. Scarlett Johansson brilliantly adds much needed sex appeal without revealing much skin. However, the climax battle ending of the movie seems like a complete ripoff of Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). Manhattan again, seriously? The other downside of Marvel's Avengers is that young children and those who did not see preceding films (Thor, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger, Hulk) may feel very lost watching it. Also, I personally think that Captain America's (Chris Evans) mask looks very funny.

Second opinion: "It's cool but I liked the beginning more than the end where the real battle begins" (Iris Loong).

To watch in 3-D? The film was converted to 3D in post-production and therefore, the effects are not obvious, even when it is seen at an IMAX cinema. So 2D screening would be best.

Rating: 4.5 / 5

[SPOILER SECTION BEGINS HERE]
Questionable scenes: How does Captain America (Chris Evans) manage to find and get to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) when they are fighting each other in the woods? How is it possible for Bruce Banner to get to Manhattan just in time for the war? Not to question about how he manage to find the team so easily as well. He can't seem control himself from beating everyone up after his first Hulk transformation in the movie but later on at the end he seem to have full control. This doesn't make sense.

Asgard or whatever planet they come from... they all speak English.

Spot Stan Lee: It's quite hard to miss him in this one. He appears at the end in one of the videos as one of people interviewed about The Avengers.

Mid-credit scene: Earth is now classified as a world that can't be ruled by the other unknown realm. Thanos is revealed to be the next villain.

Post-credit scene: Apparently, this is only shown on the screenings in the US. Click here to watch it on YouTube before it's removed.

    1) Captain America have superspeed dude, of course he can run as fast to the place they were fighting.

    2) Well, bruce get to the place with the funny bike and yeah, it was all over the news where the fighting scenes were, stark tower dude!

    3) Like bruce said, "here's my secret guys, I'm always angry.. then he turns into hulk and smash the alien!"

    4) Well, of course they speak english, they are gods dude! They speak whichever language they've been to.

Hope this clears out your question. :)

  5. U know, Hulk can jump very far from 1 place to another place, it was dam keng and then decide to rent a bike, then travel to the place lol dam weak wei Bruce Banner ride the bike lol

@Zuh: Captain America is using bike to travel short distant if very emergency (or travel with bike into the scene in comic), it don't seems that he got "super speed" to run lol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America

  6. @Zuh Thanks for the answers but we all know they all can run fast and stuff. The point is that it's so coincident that they can find each other at the right time.

And about Hulk. [SPOILER] That explains why he can transform at will but not why he can't control himself from beating up everyone on the ship and yet he can follow orders later on in the movie. [SPOILER]

And the Asgardians and the aliens, they're not Gods I believe. They're just aliens. It doesn't make any sense that they speak English every where in the Universe.

  8. @KianFai That's true also hahaha!

  9. @Kian Have u seen captain america first avenger? In that movie it shows the captain can run fast and capture the bad guys in that movie. :)

@Tony When thor and iron man fight, there are plenty of thunderous lightning made by thor, and also laser shooting pewpewpew by iron man, so that's the signal of their whereabouts to captain. Plus like u said, its night time, it makes it easier for captain. :)

Bout hulk i believe he actually can control his mind on the 2nd transformation, as on the comic, he can be both, mindless hulk, and also he can control his mind, i believe when he can control his anger, he can also control his mind when turns to hulk.

Yeap they are aliens but some of the asgardians is gods as can be seen in thor movies and they tend to travel between realms, if you talk about the aliens (chitauri) that i also dont know where they learn to speak english. haha!

  14. @zuh , or maybe it should be burst speed (would last for 5-10second, and would exhaust body + drain energy very fast), enhance human mah lol
