Prometheus (2012 film) | Movie review

Prometheus 2012 film movie poster Rated: PG-13
Genre: Science fiction, thriller
Running Time: 2 Hours 4 Minutes
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba

Synopsis: "Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race" (20th Century Fox).

Verdict: Perhaps a wise choice by Ridley Scott to not have proceeded this as an official prequel to the Alien film franchise because it would've turned out to seem more like a remake instead. Even then, it still has a similar bunch of characters and the same sort of environment. The only positives I saw in Promotheus was its great visual effects and cinematography. Other than that, nothing new or inspiring. The storyline is too vague with too many underdeveloped and unnecessary characters. It intrigues viewers with questions but leaves them with many unanswered. The scares are insufficient and some predictable. However, it'd be quite a treat if you've never seen a space horror film before in your life.

Second opinion: "Disturbing and yet interesting" (Iris Loong, never seen any Alien instalment before).

Alien's android vs. Prometheus' android: Both actors played their respective roles brilliantly. Alien's Bishop, played by Lance Henriksen, is a straight-forward robot with no emotion whereas Prometheus' David, played by Michael Fassbender, is designed to have some human emotions and the need to exist.

Guy Pearce: Why the heck they had to get this fella to play Peter Weyland, a very old man with very little screen time?

Rating: 2.5 / 5

A list of what the alien biological weapon can do: Kill their creators, bypass all technologically advanced detections, decay the infected to death, create physically strong zombies, allow the infected to have sex with an uninfected without being contagious, impregnate a person with an alien octopus/squid through the infected, and continuously evolve using other humanoid lifeforms as hosts.

Dumbest scene: Janek (Idris Elba), the captain of Prometheus spaceship, decides to sacrifice himself and his pilots to crash into the alien ship just because one possibly unstable woman tells them to believe her that Earth would be destroyed if they didn't take the alien ship down. The two underdeveloped pilot characters, for no valid reason, seems happy to follow the captain's decision.

Flawed scene: Shaw's (Noomi Rapace) suit runs out of oxygen close to the end of the movie but never refilled the tank before escaping the ship from the aliens. She goes on to search for David without any struggle to breathe.

  2. like they always said, good stuff always runs out when there's something bad happened... so is the oxygen supply! I assume the oxgen was actually from the helmet itself? Since they never show any oxygen tank from the beginning? Haha... Perhaps they could make a funny parody out of this movie especially the captain and the crew crash into the 'Creator' ship scene.

I think I watched, but can't remember at all. Gotta search back and re-watch!

Your rating quite low ah, I thought the story line was good! Yeah, dumb that the pilot with his co-pilots decided to just die like that. Like, uh, that's how it's gonna end in this movie? Haha! :)

  5. bro, the captain decides to smash the ship into the engineer's ship because he was the one who theorized that the engineers are building bio weapons with intent to send to earth. of course he decides to stop them since its his theory.

  8. @HenryLee LOL That's true we have no idea where they store the oxygen. We don't even know if it's refilled automatically or refillable at all.

@ErnestNg It does make more sense that he did, but makes no sense for the other two pilots to go along with it so willingly. We have no idea what kinda of background and attitude these two has because there's no development for these two characters at all.

@KianFaiKoh Disgusting? Not really. I've seen far more convincing films with gross scenes.
