The Possession (2012) | Movie review

Possession 2012 film movie poster
Rated: P13
Genre: Horror
Running Time: 1 Hour 28 Minutes
Director: Ole Bornedal
Cast: Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick

Synopsis: "A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child" (GSC Movies).

Verdict: Why oh why did they have to make yet another movie about a little girl being possessed by an evil spirit? And not to mention how none of them turned out any where as great as the classic, The Exorcist (1973). The Possession is no different than those ripoffs. Absolutely cliched and falls very short. The film starts off with a long, boring and predictable build-up with really badly written dialogues and some not-so-impressive acting. Then when I thought some fun was finally coming, it went straight to the climax and the ending without much of a struggle for the characters. There are plenty of scenes with great opportunities to scare the shit out of me but they all turned out extremely disappointing. Ultimately, if the movie followed the accounts of what really happened, it would've been much more creepier. The true story that it's based on had nothing to do with possession and exorcism.

Second opinion: "Watchable for those with a weak heart" (Iris Loong).

Malaysian censorship: There are some scenes with little skips and I believe it's because they're dialogues about god and stuff.

Rating: 1 / 5

[SPOILER SECTION BEGINS HERE]
The whole movie & plotholes in one paragraph: The prologue scene shows an old lady gets injured badly by the supernatural powers of the Dybbuk box that does not seem to be opened. A married couple with two daughters got divorced because the father's a busy 2nd division college basketball coach (dafuq?) but he seems to always have time to look after his daughters in the movie. They buy the box from a garage sale. The younger daughter, Em (Natasha Calis), opens the box and begins to slowly go out of character, gradually possessed by the evil spirit inside the box. She stabs her father's hand with a fork and all he has to say to her is "Go to your room" and never bothers to understand why she did it. The father gets rid of the box but for unknown reasons, the box does not react. Em retrieves the box and gets fully possessed. The father knows what's happening, brings a book of bible to Em and reads it to her. She seems uncomfortable with that but all she does is make the bible fly away. She starts acting like an animal looking for food in the fridge and mildly attacking her mother. They bring her to the hospital and somehow, the live image of the MRI is able to show the demon inside her body (this MRI machine must be from the underworld or something). Em stares cock at the mother's new boyfriend and his teeth starts to fall out. This is the most impressive power we can see from her in the whole damn movie. No idea why she doesn't do that to those who are more of a threat to her. A young Jewish rabbi is kind enough to help but fails in the first exorcism attempt. After some chasing in the hospital, the demon transfers to the father's body. The rabbi starts screaming "Abyzou" a few times and the demon that looks like a melting version of Smeagol crawls back into its box. The rabbi dies in a car crash. The end.

  1. lol. nice meme.. sigh, lately i'm more into gore movies rather than ghost ones. Both horror genre, but the exploitation, sick ones rocks.

watched The watch, and it was rather funny actually. A good movie for laughs without taking itself too seriously

  2. Damn! When will anyone start making a really good scary horror movie? The Exorcist is still the best and most realistic portrayal of a possessed girl. And they did not even have any special effects!!

  14. I think most horror movies are just rehashes of the classics like exorcist, omen, poltergeist etc.

  15. You know it is going to be bad when the Possessed girl performs martial arts moves and stances. I didn't realise that demons wanted to seem cool! Director's Fantasy!
