Premium Rush (2012 film)

Premium Rush 2012 film movie poster

Rated: P13
Genre: Action
Running Time: 1 Hour 34 Minutes
Director: David Koepp
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez

Synopsis: "When a New York City bicycle messenger picks up an envelope at Columbia University a dirty cop becomes desperate to get his hands on it and chases the messenger throughout the city" (Sony Pictures).

Verdict: Despite the poor script, totally unoriginal & flawed plot, unnecessary nonlinear timeline, ripping off the Sherlock Holmes' (2009 & 2011) forecast-the-future-of-each-options trick, and its current controversy with the lawsuit & charges of copyright infringement, Premium Rush manages to provide a decent old-school fun rush of bicycle action. Good choice of music as well. However, the movie could have probably gone straight to DVD or TV if it was without Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon & Dania Ramirez to make it seem premium. It's also a pretty bad influence for the young viewers who rides bikes 'cause it kinda teaches people to ride dangerously on the streets without breaks.

Second opinion: "Quite interesting" (Iris Loong).

Mid-credit scene: A short one where they show the damages and injury suffered by Gordon-Levitt caused by a filming accident.

Malaysian censorship: The F-words are poorly censored. They cut the film instead of just muting off the words.

Illegal ripoff: Copyright infringement lawsuit was filed against Premium Rush by the author of the 1998 novel, The Ultimate Rush. The writers of the film were so lazy that they even copied the names of the characters of the book. The only major difference I see is that the messengers in the book ride roller-blades instead of bicyles. That would've been more interesting to watch wouldn't it?

Rating: 2.5 / 5

Major stereotyping: The white guy's the good guy trying to help out a poor helpless China girl against the crooked a NYPD while the black guy's an ass who's trying to prove that he's a faster cyclist while stealing his girlfriend.

There wouldn't be a movie... if the makers of this film have brains to understand that the Chinese also knows how to use email and image-messaging through phone. Then the protagonist wouldn't have needed to go through all that mess just to send the oh-so-important little illegal ticket in person.

Worst flaw: It takes the protagonist almost the whole movie to get to his destination but his colleagues and all the other cyclists take only a few minutes to arrive there from a phone call to back him up in the most insignificant way when there's already a better help on the way.

Favourite quote: "This is the most fun I've had with my clothes on."
