Synopsis: "Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate" (Sony Pictures).

Verdict: One of the worst and most unoriginal remakes I've ever seen. If you haven't seen the original film (released 22 years ago), please do. I'm quite confident that you'll find it much more entertaining than this one. They completely removed the whole Mars part where the climax of the original film begins. Yeah, that means this remake has no mutants and aliens. All the iconic and significant scenes from the original are either shortened or completely removed and replaced with nothing worth mentioning. The emotional and lesser humour approach failed miserably as well. The dialogues are not any better than the original. The futuristic setting, elements and air traffic action are obviously ripoff improvisations from Star Wars, Blade Runner and The Fifth Element. The remake also messed up the ending as it doesn't get the viewers to wonder if the protagonist was dreaming or not. Well so what is there that I was impressed with if I've already seen the original? Nothing. This not-so-total remake of Total Recall is totally rubbish.

Second opinion: "Liked the concept but not as exciting as I hoped" (Iris Loong; never seen the original).

Colin Farrell vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Colin Farrell tried to play the Quaid/Hauser in the more emotionally and realistically but the pace of the film didn't allow the character to develop that way. He also lacks of the presence and charm of the Governator who can entertain despite his not-so-great acting and funny accent.

Malaysian censorship: Nothing is cut at all. Surprisingly, it is less graphic than the original and unlike the original, the three-breasted hooker here wears an underwear and appears in only one scene.

Rating: 1 / 5

Real or just a dream? This is the biggest problem of the remake. The original makes the viewers wonder and allows them to make their own assumptions whereas this remake just confirms to the viewers that everything that happens on the film is real and not a dream/memory created by Rekall.

Incompetent villains: Sometimes the synthetic robots (that reminds me of the clones in Star Wars) shoots, sometimes they don't. Sometimes when they carry guns without using them, they become bullet shield for the human villain to shoot instead. Sometimes when they carrying guns, they are more easily beaten then when they not carrying guns. Sometimes their weak points can be easily attacked, sometimes the protagonist don't even try. The main antagonist has a chance to kill the protagonist with one stab to the back but instead, he slashes him and gets countered. What the fuck?

  9. Total Recall is not alien lar... they're just Earthlings that gone to Mars, got expose to radiation from the sun (due to cheap dome on the colony tat doesn't filter radiations, boss save cost) and eventually become MUTANTS.
