Dredd 3D (2012) | Movie review

Dredd 3D 2012 film movie poster

Rated: 18
Genre: Science fiction, action
Running Time: 1 Hour 37 Minutes
Director: Pete Travis
Cast: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey

Synopsis: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

Verdict: Now this is how you should make a film adaptation of a popular comic strip. A Judge should really sentence the guy who made the film's trailer to death 'cause the trailer sure didn't do the movie any justice at all. Dredd 3D has no character development and no complicated plot, just kicking ass with intelligent action from beginning to the end. Extremely violent and gory. Kind of reminds me of Robocop at some parts, but it's okay. The film plays around with cliches intelligently as well. They also made absolute brilliant use of the 3D effects to sort of let the viewers experience the Slo-Mo drug (a part of the plot). And Stallone, sorry but Karl Urban played this character way better than you did.

Second opinion: "Interesting and great visuals but it's kinda gross as well" (Iris Loong).

To watch in 3D? Yes, do watch it at an IMAX cinema otherwise you won't be able to truly enjoy the pretty cool Slo-Mo visuals. It'd make you feel like you're high on the drug as well.

Malaysian censorship: I dunno how but nothing seemed to be cut at all despite its extreme violence, gore and vulgarity. This one's worth paying for, people.

Rating: 4 / 5

Only one plothole that bothered me... Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is very uptight, telling the rookie Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) that they cannot execute any suspect without being 100% sure that the person has committed a death-sentence crime. However in some of the scenes, Dredd shoots and kills many suspects without knowing whether or not these people were going to commit a crime. Isn't this a little contradictory? These people could've been innocent and they could be holding guns because they were forced to. By right, he can't be killing them before they even point a gun at him.
