Synopsis: "A true crime novelist (Ethan Hawke) struggling to find his next big story, moves his family into a house where the horrific murder of an entire family took place. But after finding a box of home videos in which other families are also brutally murdered, his investigation leads him to a supernatural entity that may be placing his own family in harm's way" (GSC Movies).

Verdict: Making a mainstream horror flick that's frightening without potentially giving someone a deadly heart attack is a real challenge these days but Sinister pulled it off despite its typical story of a family moving into a haunted house. This is a genuine American horror movie, ladies and gentlemen. It kicks off brilliantly with the found footage as the opening to set the mood before the creeping begins after the first third of the film, leaving very little gaps for a breather. The slow torturing dreadful scenes would make many wanna just give in and close their eyes, or at least, that's how I felt. Now the only thing's missing is a less-predictable and faulty plot.

Second opinion: None this time 'cause I watched this alone, fuck.

Rating: 3.5 / 5

Favourite footage: Let's review them one by one! The victims on Barbeque '79 were still unconscious when they're being barbequed. Dying by drowning on Pool Party '66 ain't that terrfying. Sleepy Time '98 could've been better if the deaths weren't a clean throat slits. The sickest should've been Lawn Work '86 with the faces of the victims being lawn mowed but to avoid having any gory content, the full footage isn't shown in the movie. My favourite has to be Family Hanging Out '11 (see image below). It's the perfect one to set the vibe from the beginning and it got me wondering if it's really supernatural or just edited by the villain.

Plot holes: The members of the protagonist's (Ethan Hawk) family (including himself) are chopped to three pieces each by his daughter (Clare Foley) but why bother providing him the "extended endings" video to reveal the murderers before killing them? The Deputy So and So (James Ransone) finds out that protagonist is in deep shit and believes that he's going to die but doesn't bother to text him or traveling to his place after failing to reach his phone the entire day. How competent.
