Chinese Zodiac a.k.a CZ12 (HK) | Movie review

Also known as Armour of God III: Chinese Zodiac; 十二生肖

Rated: P13
Language: Mandarin, English, French
Subtitle: English, Malay, Chinese
Genre: Action, adventure
Running Time: 123 minutes
Director: Jackie Chan
Cast: Jackie Chan

Synopsis: "The film revolves around Asian Hawk in his final mission, in which he must collect the 12 statue heads of the Chinese Zodiac to save the world. One may remember that Chan used the Chinese Zodiac symbols as the basis for the first season of his animated series, JACKIE CHAN ADVENTURES, back in 2000" (GSC Movies).

Verdict: Jackie Chan's still got it. CZ12 is like a tribute of the veteran star's own old skool Hong Kong action classics. Unoriginal plot, cheap foreign actors, extremely poor English dialogues, plenty of illogical scenes, villains are overly incompetent but highly entertaining fast-paced action and slapstick humour. Instead of keeping the Indiana Jones influences from the previous instalment (Armour of God II: Operation of Condor), this film crosses over the styles of a few heist and spy movies like Once A Thief, Mission Impossible and Ocean's 11 and incorporates them all with Jackie Chan's stunts, always impressive action choreography and horrible script. From body blading to sky diving, you'd likely find Chinese Zodiac enjoyable even if you're not an action movie fan.

Second opinion: "More entertaining than I expected" (Iris Loong).

Favourite scene: [SPOILER] Definitely the scene with the body blading. No one has used it on big screen before, it's fresh, it's not short and well choreographed. It's like a fun bonus level or a mini game in a video game where the character faces more difficult encounters as he draws closer to the destination. [SPOILER ENDS]

Notable cameo appearances by: Bolin Chen, Kenny G, Shu Qi and Daniel Wu.

Rating: 3.5 / 5
