UFC Fight Night 43 & 44: Swanson & Marquardt victorious

UFC Fight Night 44: Swanson turns up midway through the bout to outperform Stephens just enough for the decision win

Swanson body kick Stephens UFC Fight Night 44

Two Fight Nights back-to-back on 28th June, the second doubleheader by the UFC. This one marked the first time ever UFC had an event in San Antonio, and perhaps the first time in a long time that all bouts in the main card ended in decisions.

The main event between Cub Swanson (21-5, 6-win streak) and Jeremy Stephens (23-10) started off really slowly as well, with both of them landing just two strikes I'd consider significant. In the second round, Stephens begun to let his hands and legs fly, and fly with power, connecting with some pretty solid punches. Swanson looked clueless up against the speedy strong opponent of his... until he hurt Stephens with a kick to the body in the third round and chased him down with big uppercut and hook swings, but Stephens defended well enough to recover. Swanson's confidence grew and started attempting more fancy kicks.

Not much action in round 4 as both the strikers paced themselves to conserve energy for the final round. Whoever that wins the fifth round would win the bout and it was Swanson who found the opening with the same kick to Stephens' left liver, followed by a right hand to the right face. Swanson got the deserved unanimous decision win.

UFC Fight Night 43: Marquardt applies experience and submits Te Huna

Marquardt armbar Te Huna UFC Fight Night 43

James Te Huna (16-8) pushed forward from the opening bell but Nate Marquardt (33-13-2) attacked with a knee, defended lift-up-and-slam attempt and managed to use the following momentum for his own takedown. In Te Huna's full guard, Marquardt striked with plenty of damaging elbows which opened up his Kiwi opponent's forehead. Marquardt got greedy, moved to half guard, tried to throw a heavy elbow but missed and allowed Te Huna to get back his feet.

Both got into clinched where Te Huna connected with some significant uppercuts but that only pleased the home crowd for a while as Marquardt somehow managed to trip Te Huna and landed himself on full mount with 2 minutes in the first round to go. Te Huna turned and gave up his back to avoid anymore punishments but Marquardt quickly locked up Te Huna's left arm and transitioned into an armbar while sliding off Te Huna's back. Te Huna quickly tapped out to the submission and the home crowd in New Zealand went silent.
