ONE: Tigers of Asia headlined by middleweight title bout Igor Svirid vs. Vitaly Bigdash
The official fight card of the upcoming ONE: Tigers of Asia was announced recently and it features a total of eight Malaysian fighters including the usual suspects Peter Davis, Ann Osman, Ev Ting and Gianni Subba, along with two MIMMA graduates, Agilan Thani and Gianni's younger brother, Keanu Subba.
After defeating a number of newcomers and less experienced fighters, Malaysian star Peter Davis (10-3) finally gets a real tough challenge as he'll be facing the highly experienced Australian, Adrian "The Hunter" Pang (21-8), who's a former champion of several promotions including Legend FC and Cage FC. His last fight was a submission victory against Vincent Latoel, who defeated the fighter who submitted Peter, Eddie Ng. It's going to be difficult, but Peter needs to win to prove that he's more than just a local hero.
Sabahan female fighter Ann "Athena" Osman (3-1) will be facing her toughest challenge too against Irina Mazepa (0-0) of Russia in the co-main event. Although Mazepa never fought in MMA before, she's a six-time Wushu world champion and a K-1 world champion kickboxer. It will be a fight between MMA experience and world class striking.
Ev Ting (9-3) is on the card again in hopes of bouncing back from his defeat to Marat Gafurov in the no.1 featherweight title contenders bout a few months ago. He will be taking on former featherweight champion Honoria "The Rock" Banario (8-5) of the Philippines who has been on a losing streak since winning the inaugural title bout against his fellow countryman Eric " The Natural" Kelly (11-1). Speaking of which, the card also features highly anticipated return Kelly, who was a top featherweight title contender before the year-long hiatus due to some apparent controversies. He will be facing Hiroshige Tanaka (10-2) who also hasn't fought for more than a year.
My hopes were high when ONE Championship enquired its Facebook followers if they'd like to see the rematch between Ben Askren and Luis Santos in KL for the welterweight title, and the response were overwhelmingly positive. But disappointingly, after yet another cancellation of an event in China, the middleweight title bout of ONE: Dynasty of Champions Shanghai between champ Igor Svirid (10-1) and newcomer Vitaly Bigdash (7-0) was rescheduled as the main event for ONE: Tiger of Asia KL instead of Askren-Santo 2, which is now going to be the main event for ONE: Pride of Lions happening in Singapore on November 13th.
ONE: Tiger of Asia will be held on October 9th at Stadium Putra in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. As part of the first ever Malaysian MMA week, ONExMIMMA Multi-Pass ticket packages are available as well. Find out more and get your tickets now from redtix.airasia.com.
