Review: Dim Sum & Co.
Publika Shopping Gallery, Kuala Lumpur
Located at Publika in KL, Dim Sum & Co. is a Chinese Canton cuisine restaurant that serves pork-free dim sum and also alcohol beverages as the outlet is partially Beer Factory Express as well. This simple and yet seemingly new concept allows patrons here to enjoy authentically made dim sum and fresh ice-cold draught beer from the bar at the same time without breaking the bank.
The foods here — Siew Mai (RM7.90/3 pcs), Har Gau (RM8.90/3 pcs), Lo Mai Gai (RM7.90), buns, dumplings, etc. — are all made from scratch and served while it's still very hot. I bet you could already smell it in your head while reading this. And your parents would be pleased. The price range is around RM6.90 to RM9.90 per dish of dim sum and as for beers, it's RM50 for 3 pints of Tiger. Pretty fair considering where the outlet is, and how well the foods and services were.
I've had the privilege to try a lot of their stuff last week and despite not being a consistent dim sum fan (maybe 'cause I'm not a breakfast person), I enjoyed most of the dishes. Some may say that some of their dishes were a bit salty, but I didn't mind it at all. My favourite has got to be the Cheesy Chicken Onion Puff (RM8.90/2 pcs). I'm not sure if it's an original dish but I absolutely loved how tastily savory and tender it was. I totally liked their Milk Tea (RM9.90/cold) as it has a unique taste compared to the ones at the typical places. Many would, I think, like the adorable Molten Charcoal Bun (RM8.90/2 pcs) that contains salted egg custard inside. The bun appears to be charcoal-black on the menu but they might serve it in pink like in this photos here with eyes which reminds of the cute rounded creatures in Ragnarok the online RPG game (eat 'em to level up!).
Officially, their dim sum services are from 8AM to 4PM before the outlet transforms into Beer Factory Express but when I asked, they said that they'd usually continue to serve dim sum after 4PM and if the demand is high, the kitchen could remain open until as late as 11PM and beyond. Thus, if you're looking for a place to eat dim sum while enjoying cold glasses of beer at night, Dim Sum & Co. is the place to go to if you're in Klang Valley. Personally, I don't think I enjoy dim sum while drinking beer that much, but I'm sure many others would. And for those who wants to eat dim sum but couldn't due to non-halal reasons, Dim Sum & Co. might be one of the best options as well.
If you're wondering why you haven't seen this place before, it's because it's outside of the usual inner mall. Don't get me wrong, the outlet is within Publika, just that it's one of the shop lots in the outer area facing the main shopping gallery. To save yourself time, just walk straight to the information counter and ask for direction. The interior of the outlet is nice and comfy — western style with dim lighting and retro pop music. It has a bar and tables outside as well but limited.
