Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Movie review

Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) returns to co-produce, direct and co-write (with Jane Goldman) this sequel to his 2014 hit action spy comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service and I am pleased to say that it is highly enjoyable even though it isn't as surprising and "mind-blowing" (literally) as the first film.

The film kicks off strongly with a car chase-cum-fight scene which leads to the destruction of the entire Kingsman secret intelligence agency. Only Eggsy / Galahad (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) manage to survive the attack masterminded by a highly advance drug cartel owned by the notorious Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore) who then threatens to kill millions of drug abusers in the world. To stop the villain, the two Kingsmen travel to the United States and seek for assistance from Statesman, who're their American counterpart where they find Harry (Colin Firth), the supposed dead former Galahad, still alive but without memory of being a Kingsman.

With the ground already broken for the genre by the first film, this sequel keeps up the over-the-top action, violence and profane humour at high pace — from fighting a man with robotic arm during a car chase to trying to have sex with the girlfriend of a villain to getting chased by robot dogs — to the point that they don't even deal with character deaths properly at the beginning. One thing for sure, I was never bored for second. And when the film does take the effort to be emotional, it made sure I felt it. These moments should've felt extremely cheesy but it didn't. Fantastic performances once again by the returning main cast Taron Egerton (Eddie the Eagle), Mark Strong (RocknRolla) and Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Baby, The King's Speech).

The film does have a few more other downsides. Although Julianne Moore (Still Alice, Hunger Games films) did okay as the pretentiously bubbly psychotic antagonist, the character no where as great as the previous villain, Richmond Valentine who was played by none other than Samuel L. Jackson. The film also uses way more CGI for its action sequences compared to the first one which are hits and misses. But then again, to have robotic arms, robot dogs and a whip that can cut through anything — the use of CG is perhaps fair.

There are a few big names who appear in the film as minor characters — Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and Halle Berry but it's Elton John who totally steals the show, playing an alternate, foul-mouthed version of himself. And the payoff in the end alone makes this film worth the watch. I certainly laughed my butt off. In overall, Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle may not be a superior to the first film but it's still a very fun movie that's filled with action, humour and some emotional moments.

What I would've named the film: "Men in Black II: Logan"

Malaysian censorship: The film has strong profanities, violent action and one sexy scene but since it's already rated 18, I believe censorship would be minimal, if any.

Verdict: Although not as brilliant as the first film, this sequel is still highly entertaining to watch.
